Cheap, authentic, tasty Japanese and Korean food is what you’ll get from Mashitta – A small eatery in SC (Shopping Center) inside the U.P. Diliman Campus, Quezon City. It’s the fourth shop at the right from the entrance near the U.P. co-op.

The place itself is not something that will lure you back again and again with its plastic chairs and cramped seating arrangement (even with an improvised second floor area). But the food and prices are definitely worth coming back for more. I have been eating here since I was a freshman and still eat here at least 2x a week. One proof that the food is really good are the number of Koreans eating here, though I haven’t seen any Japanese customers. :D

For the price, there is actually no dish that’s priced above 150 pesos! A warning though, if you eat here during peak hours (11:30-1:00), the service is terribly slow, and you should be really patient. But if the place is not packed, they actually serve your food quite fast.

Here are some dishes that I have already tried, though most I really love, some I just rather not order again. I’ll try to update this as soon as I try and remember the other stuff they serve there. They’ve just actually updated their menu this July 2010 and added a lot of new dishes. Takeout costs an additional 10 pesos for the microwaveable container since U.P. has already banned Styrofoam containers.

Mashitta Agedashi TofuAgedashi Tofu
A Japanese tofu dish with dried fish flakes and a thin, brown, savory sauce. I don’t exactly know why I order this again and again but I think it’s the taste of the dried fish mixing with the sauce. Plus, it’s very cheap.
Rating: Must-try!
Price:
Agedashi Tofu – 65 pesos
With rice – plus 10.

Gyoza
A Japanese dumpling with a tangy soy sauce. One of the most popular dishes in Mashitta maybe because it’s very mainstream and doesn’t seem exotic. It’s like siomai but way better.
Rating: Must-try!
Price: 3 pcs. – 55 pesos | 5 pcs – 80 | with rice – plus 10.

Kimbab
A Korean rice roll wrapped in seaweed with carrots, a choice of ham, tuna, seafood, and avocado, sesame seeds and cucumber. One order consists of about 12 pieces. This is one of my favorites and I always order the Ham Kimbab because I find the Tuna Kimbab too “fishy”. The Fried Kimbab is just kimbab dipped in batter and then fried while the Egg roll Kimbab is kimbab wrapped in a yellow egg strip.
Rating: Must-try!
Price: Ham or Tuna – 75 pesos.
Fried Kimbab – plus 20 | Egg roll Kimbab – plus 40
Seafood – 110 | Mashitta Special – 120

Mashitta Kimchi JeonKimchi Jeon
A Korean kimchi patty with lots of kimchi, egg and your choice of either tofu or tuna. The patty is quite large, and with a cup of rice, 3 pcs. is more than enough for me. Yes, this is a bit spicy but very tolerable than other kimchi dishes served here. The tofu variant is my favorite but the tuna is also good too.
Rating: Must-try!
Price:
3 pcs. – 75 pesos | 5 pcs. – 110 | with rice – plus 10

Kimchi Fried Rice
A Korean dish with lots of rice and kimchi that it eating this makes my eyes watery and my nose runny. The heap of rice is topped with a sunny-side up egg and sprinkled with sesame seeds. One of the most ordered food in Mashitta since almost everytime I go there, someone is eating this.
Rating: Must-try!
Price:
Kimchi Fried Rice – 65 pesos

Mashitta Jajang RiceJajang Rice
A Korean rice bowl with cubes of either chicken or pork, carrots, potato, onion and a thick brown sauce. I have never tried the pork version but the chicken one is perfect for me because they don’t include chicken skin which I really hate. The reason why I love this other than the taste is the big serving. I’m almost always over-full after eating this. Perfect with an ice-cold lemon C2.
Rating: Must-try!
Price: Chicken Jajang Rice – 85 pesos | Pork Jajang Rice – 85.

California Maki
Everyone knows what a California Maki is, right? And because of that, it makes this one of the most popular dishes of Mashitta. The myonnaise-based dressing on top of each roll makes it very tasty, though sometimes, quite tiring to the palate. I didn’t get why people keep on ordering this since it’s not that amazing. But maybe you’ll like it.
Rating: Try once.
Price:
California Maki – 110 pesos | with tempura – 140

Pork Katsudon
Breaded pork fillet covered with sauce served on top of rice and sprinkled with sesame seeds. Ok taste but nothing to rave about. Popular with the students because of its cheap price and familiarity.
Rating: Try once.
Price: Pork Katsudon with rice – 75 pesos.

Yaki udon / Yaki soba
These two are actually the same and the only difference is the thickness of the noodles used. Udon uses thick noodles while the soba uses thinner ones. I didn’t really enjoy eating these since I don’t like the way their sweetness tasted. And I’m not a big fan of vegetables and these two dishes definitely have lots of veggies. I also see a lot of people ordering these two maybe just because they’re familiar.
Rating: Try once.
Price:
Yaki udon – 110 pesos | Yaki soba – 110

Kimchi Ramen
Noodle soup with egg and a fair amount of kimchi. A bit spicy, but it’s a little too watery for me. Maybe it’s just that specific serving so I’ll try to order this again and see if it’s better.
Rating: Try once.
Price: Kimchi Ramen – 75 pesos

Others
Here are some dishes that I’ve tried and think are not worth ordering, either they’re bad or just plain ordinary. Rating: Don’t try.
Chicken Don
-
burnt. overpriced. if you’ve tried this at other restaurants, no need to order this.
Chicken Teriyaki
-
a pricier chicken don. I couldn’t find a difference! same dish, different name.
Tofu Furai
-
too bland. you’re better off with agedashi tofu if you just want a tofu dish.

Have you eaten at Mashitta before? Comment below on what you’ve ordered whether you loved or hated it. Any other dishes that you’ve tried but aren’t posted her? We would love to know! Just post your comments below.

San Marino Tuna Paella – Review

san marino posterWhen I saw the tv commercial of the new San Marino Tuna Paella, I decided that I’d buy one as soon as I’m able to go grocery shopping. So that weekend, I browsed the canned goods aisle at the nearest SM Supermarket. I expected it to be near the San Marino Corned Tuna (which I love. I find the corned tuna of Century Tuna a bit malansa). I felt disappointed when I didn’t see one. (Really disappointed!) But good thing I looked further down the aisle, and eureka! I saw a small pile of San Marino Tuna Paella cans at the topmost shelf. I bought 3 cans! So good or bad tasting, I’m stuck with those 3!

At home, I immediately opened one and tasted a spoonful. Wow! I didn’t expect it to be that similar-tasting to our home-cooked paella. It was really good for the price! But of course, even if it was that nice, it wasn’t perfect. So here are the pros and cons:

Pros:San Marino Tuna Paella Inside
+ Enough tuna flakes
+ Soft rice
+ Tasty ( not tiring to the palate)
+ Enough Green Peas
+ Easy-open can
+ Affordable: 29 pesos
+ Not malansa
+ Ready-to-eat, no heating/cooking needed

Cons:
- Didn’t see enough carrots
- A bit oily
- Bitin! (I’m a big-eater but it’s enough for a medium-eater)

Over-all, I rate this as a must-try!

About Calibre

calibre is a free and open source e-book library management application developed by users of e-books for users of e-books. It has a cornucopia of features divided into the following main categories:

* Library Management
calibre manages your e-book collection for you. It is designed around the concept of the logical book, i.e., a single entry in your library that may correspond to actual e-book files in several formats.
calibre can sort the books in your library by: Title, Author, Date added, Date published, Size, Rating, Series, etc.
In addition, it supports extra searchable metadata:
o Tags: A flexible system for categorizing your collection however you like
o Comments: A long form entry that you can use for book description, notes, reviews, etc.
You can easily search your book collection for a particular book. calibre supports searching any and all of the fields mentioned above. You can construct advanced search queries by clicking the helpful “Advanced search” button to the left of the search bar.
You can export arbitrary subsets of your collection to your hard disk arranged in a fully customizable folder structure.
Finally, calibre will even go out onto the internet to find book metadata based on existing title/author or ISBN information. It can download various types of metadata and covers for your books, automatically. The metadata system is written using plugins so that different types of metadata sources can be supported in the future.

* E-book conversion
calibre can convert from a huge number of formats to a huge number of formats. It supports all the major e-book formats.
Input Formats: CBZ, CBR, CBC, CHM, EPUB, FB2, HTML, LIT, LRF, MOBI, ODT, PDF, PRC, PDB, PML, RB, RTF, TCR, TXT
Output Formats: EPUB, FB2, OEB, LIT, LRF, MOBI, PDB, PML, RB, PDF, TCR, TXT

The conversion engine has lots of powerful features. It can rescale all font sizes, ensuring the output e-book is readable no matter what font sizes the input document uses. It can automatically detect/create book structure, like chapters and Table of Contents. It can insert the book metadata into a “Book Jacket” at the start of the book.

* Syncing to e-book reader devices
calibre has a modular device driver design that makes adding support for different e-reader devices easy. At the moment, it has support for a large number of devices, the complete list of which is here. Syncing supports updating metadata on the device from metadata in the library and creation of collections on the device based on the tags defined in the library. If a book has more than one format available, calibre automatically chooses the best format when uploading to the device. If none of the formats is suitable, calibre will automatically convert the e-book to a format suitable for the device before sending it.

* Downloading news from the web and converting it into e-book form

calibre can automatically fetch news from websites or RSS feeds, format the news into a ebook and upload to a connected device. The ebooks include the full versions of the articles, not just the summaries. Examples of supported news sites include:
o The New York Times
o The Wall Street Journal
o The Economist
o Time
o Newsweek
o The Guardian
o ESPN
o and many, many more…
calibre has over three hundred news sources and the news system is plugin based, allowing users to easily create and contribute new sources to calibre. As a result the collection of news sources keeps on growing!
If you are interested in adding support for a news site, read the User Manual. Once you have successfully created a new recipe, you can share it with other users by posting it in the calibre forum or sending it to the calibre developers for inclusion in calibre.

* Comprehensive e-book viewer
calibre has a built-in ebook viewer that can display all the major ebook formats. It has full support for Table of Contents, bookmarks, CSS, a reference mode, printing, searching, copying, customizing the rendering via a user style sheet, embedded fonts, etc.

* Content server for online access to your book collection
calibre has a built-in web server that allows you to access your ebook collection using a simple browser from any computer anywhere in the world. It can also email your books and downloaded news to you automatically. It has support for mobile devices, so you can browse your collection and download books from your smartphone, Kindle, etc.
